We take old insulation out when it's wet, moldy or fouled by animals. New material laid on top of that keeps the smell, the moisture and the mess right where they were. If yours is clean and dry, I'll tell you, and you save the cost of removal. We leave vermiculite alone. If it has to come out, a separate accredited abatement firm does that work, not us.
A bare attic is the best time for air sealing, which closes the gaps before new insulation goes in. You'll never reach those gaps this easily again. When new insulation goes back in, we keep it clear of the eave vents and run it full depth out to the edges. The edges are where it usually ends up thin.
Removal sometimes turns up bigger problems in the house. If your floors run cold, crawl space insulation is often the next thing worth a look. If a room stays hot even with a good attic over it, the walls may be close to empty, and that's a job for wall insulation. I'll tell you which of these matter now and which can wait.
